We hear this all the time, but do we do it? Not following your health care provider’s treatment plan can be bad for your health. It can cause serious problems. An important part of following your health care plan is taking your medications as directed. If you are taking medications, you should know WHAT you are taking. This means the names and doses of ALL medications you take. This includes any over-the-counter (OTC) medicines or herbal supplements you are taking. One suggestion is to cut the portion of the medication information sheet you get with your pills that looks like the label and keep them in you wallet or purse. Some people make a list of their medicines. This is fine IF you put a date on the list and update the list each time you visit the doctor and put the new date on it. You should know WHY you are taking each of the medicines. Be sure to call your pharmacist if you have any questions. Know what the potential side effects are, including any food or drug interactions of which you should be aware. Call your health care provider or pharmacist if you have unexpected side effects that do not go away. Do not change the dose of your medication or stop taking it unless your health care provider tells you to do so. Use the same pharmacy, so they get to know you and your medications. One other thing to remember is to update your primary care doctor when you see a specialist and report any medication changes or additions that doctor may have given you. The potential for serious complications—some even life threatening—is greater if you do not have some plan of approach to taking medications. Your greatest tool is a written record carried on you at all times, frequent updating that record, and asking questions. Keep asking questions until you feel confident that you understand. You are your own most powerful advocate!! Have a great Summer and Stay Healthy.
