Voluntary Recall of H1N1 LAIV MedImmune has announced a voluntary recall of 13 lot numbers of H1N1 Live Attenuated Intranasal Spray Vaccine (LAIV). This voluntary recall is NOT due to a safety issue for those who have received the nasal spray vaccine. It is due to a potency issue for unused vaccine of these particular lot numbers that may be sitting in refrigerators. Revaccination is NOT recommended. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states “the vaccine potency is or will soon be only slightly below the limit. In addition, much of this vaccine has already been administered while fully potent and within specifications. The vaccine in these lots is still expected to be effective in stimulating a protective response. There is no need to re-administer a dose to those who received vaccine from these lots.” Of the 13 recalled LAIV lot numbers, B.C.H.D. was allocated doses from 3 of those lot numbers. Outside providers who have received these lot numbers have been notified. The recalled lot numbers that were allocated to B.C.H.D. are listed below along with dates and locations these vaccines were used: 500757P – 10/27/09 Bullitt County Health Department; 10/28/09 Bullitt County Health Department; 11/17/09 Bullitt Central High School 500758P – 11/17/09 Bullitt Central High School; 12/1/09 North Bullitt High School; 12/3/09 Paroquet Springs Conference Centre 500776P – 11/3/09 Paroquet Springs Conference Centre; 12/3/09 Paroquet Springs Conference Centre; 12/08/09 Bullitt East High School An estimated 4.7 million doses in the recalled lots were distributed to providers across the United States. Most of these doses were shipped to providers in first few weeks of the vaccination campaign when the vaccine potency was still at or above the recommended level. This recall is for any unused doses from these lot numbers.
