I hope you’re having a terrific holiday season, and Santa gave you everything you asked for (if you deserved it). This time of year used to be the “slow season” here at the Health Department, but no longer. We seem to be busier every day. We’ve given over 3,800 flu shots as of Dec. 1. As I write this, we’ve not had a confirmed influenza case in Bullitt County this flu season. That makes us not only fortunate, but smart. It means you’ve either gotten your flu shot from us, your family doctor, at a hospital, or some other private provider. As long as you got it. There is no reason for 30,000 people to die from influenza each year in this country when there is enough vaccine available for everyone who wants a shot to get one. Let’s hope the rest of flu season goes as smoothly as it has so far. In November, we had several cases of MRSA in our schools. Details are elsewhere in the Newsletter. I’d like to go on record as saying the Bullitt County school system responded positively and aggressively. Information was quickly sent to parents and many concerns were alleviated quickly. Superintendent Keith Davis and the school staffs are to be commended. Our Environmental, Health Education, and HANDS sections have moved into the Harold Meredith Annex building right behind our main building on Lees Valley Road. The staff enjoys the expanded office space and the increased storage area. We haven’t scheduled an Open House/Dedication yet but we intend to soon. We’re just happy that the move is behind us. Let’s hope the winter is mild and spring arrives early. Ned Fitzgibbons, Public Health Director
