In the past few years, testing for radon through the health department has required a year-long test. In August 2009, Kentucky was able to change the testing back to short–term testing. Even though a year-long test gives a more accurate reading, a short-term test can help people decide if further testing or immediate action is needed. Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless gas that is harmlessly dispersed in outdoor air, but when trapped in buildings, can be harmful at elevated levels. Radon is estimated to cause many thousands of deaths each year. That’s because when you breathe air containing radon, you can get lung cancer. The state of Kentucky and Bullitt County in particular, have high levels of radon. Finding the radon level in your home requires radon testing. You can test your home by simply coming into the health department and picking up a free radon test kit. This testing will let you know the level of radon in your home and if you need to take any corrective action. For information, please call our environmental section at 502-955-7867.
